oOh! Community is thrilled to announce the fourth year running of Art in the Hood school art programme. This year's theme is Future Transport.

With electric cars, bikes and buses becoming more commonplace, we asked the children of our communities how they see transport in their future.

This year we've been lucky enough to receive some wonderful entries from four primary/intermediate schools across Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington. The students were asked to draw a picture that shows 'how you will travel to school in the future.'

Finalists and winners from each school have been selected by our expert panel of judges to have their artwork displayed on shelters by their schools.

2023 Judging Panel

Cleve Cameron - Founder & Managing Director, Big Street Bikers

Cleve’s vision for Big Street Bikers is to enable more bums on bikes as a fun and affordable way to get around our cities. Big Street Bikers created Locky Docks — a network of free public locking, docking, and charging stations — to help lower emissions, reduce traffic congestion, and promote health and well-being.

Cleve was so stoked to be asked to be on the judging panel for this 2023 edition of Art in the Hood. His vision for the Locky Dock network began as a drawing and he’s totally on board with dreaming big for future transport. He’s excited to see the innovative ideas children have for how they envision the future they want to live in. Cleve believes that if kids designed the streets, all our streets would be safer and better for the planet, and everyone would have a good time.

Stacey Van Der Putten - Executive General Manager Public Transport Services, Auckland Transport

Stacey leads the development and delivery of a comprehensive transformation programme to ensure achievement of the organisation's strategic objectives and priorities. Prior to becoming EGM Public Transport Services, Stacey was EGM Safety and before that spent four years leading the Metro Services team at Auckland Transport, playing a vital role supporting the development of Tāmaki Makaurau’s multi-modal (bus, train and ferry) public transport network.

Stacey is passionate about ensuring Auckland has a safe, accessible, resilient transport system which delivers real benefits to the people of Tāmaki Makaurau. Previous to AT, Stacey spent 20 years in the private sector, the majority of which was spent developing service solutions for various sectors, including public housing, healthcare, construction and defence sectors.

Katie Taylor-Duke - Senior Arts Advisor, Wellington City Council

Katie Taylor-Duke is a Senior Arts Advisor working as part of Wellington City Council’s Creative Capital team. She looks after Council’s pakiTara-toi, art on walls programme and more generally advises on the process for arts project development including accessing funding.

She loves art in unusual spaces that make visible people and places we may not know about, and that enable us to see our city differently.

It’s always a privilege working with young people and seeing their artwork in public – it brings a playful element to space and reminds us (grown-ups) that tamariki see and experience the city differently.

Rushani Bowman - Passenger Transport Coordinator, Christchurch City Council

Rushani works as the Public Transport Coordinator at the Christchurch City Council. She works closely with different agencies on improvements and changes to our public transport network. The job is busy but very rewarding when able to see positive changes happening for bus users in Ōtautahi.

As a regular public transport user herself, Rushani enjoys seeing the many different walks of life using public transport in her city. She strongly believes in encouraging our tamariki and rangatahi to see multi-modal transport options as a valid choice. Having competitions like Art in the Hood helps to contribute towards our children thinking about public transport and where it may go in the future.
